Karl Friedrich Schinkel hatte seine nationalromantische Sturm- und Drang-Zeit mit all den gotischen Kathedral – Entwürfen längst hinter sich, als er 1821 den Neubau der verfallenen deutsch-französischen Kirche plante.
Schon 1843 erhielt Schinkels Nachfolger Friedrich August Stüler den Auftrag, an die Werdersche Kirche Hand anzulegen und sie schulmäßig zu gotisieren.
