The only way to design an immersed boundary method mostly independent on the equations is the direct imposition of boundary conditions (in opposite to the indirect imposition, both are categorized as discrete forcing approaches).
The finite volume version of this, which is called the cut-cell method, is, furthermore, the only of the named approaches that retains strict conservation.
