Der Name, dt. Klausen, ital. Chiusa, hat offensichtlich etwas mit Schließen zu tun (lat. claudere = schließen, mittelhochdt. kluse = Sperre) und rührt von der besonderen Lage der Stadt im engen Tal an dieser seit alters her wichtigen Nord-Süd-Verbindung und seiner Rolle als Zollstation.
