Friedrich Vollhardt geht davon aus, dass die für Lessing wichtigen Gesprächslagen und Denkhorizonte nicht dem entsprechen, was bislang in der Toleranzforschung als Grundlagenwissen erarbeitet wurde.
Vielmehr ist die Toleranz-Debatte in Deutschland sowohl durch die Pluralisierung religiöser Bekenntnisse seit der Reformation geprägt als auch sehr stark durch ein Laienbewusstsein bestimmt, das in spiritualistischen Strömungen ausgebildet war und dem kirchlichen Lehramt mit dem Anspruch auf Duldung gegenübertrat.
Auf diese Weise soll das diskursive Netz, in dem Lessings Toleranzdenken bislang verortet wurde, im Rahmen dieses Projektes neu abgesteckt werden.

The tolerance debate in Germany has rather been both characterized by the pluralization of religious faith proclamations since the Reformation and strongly determined by a lay consciousness which was formed in the course of spiritualistic movements and demanded tolerance from the church Magisterium.
From this perspective, the discourse network within which Lessing's tolerance ideas have hitherto been placed is to be redefined as part of this project.
