1452 und 1478 wurde die Burg von den Aragonesen eingenommen und jedes Mal weitestgehend zerstört.Nach 1484 ließ Giuliano da Sangallo die Burg auf Geheiß von Cosimo I. wiedererrichten.
Die von ihm in der Form eines ungleichmäßigen Fünfecks errichteten Mauern gelten als eines der ersten Beispiele für eine Bastion.
