Die Datenreduktion, die durch die Faktorzerlegung erreicht wird, löst damit das Problem der Multikollinearität, das zuvor angesprochen wurde.
Angriffspunkt für die Berechnung der Faktorzerlegung ist neben der Korrelation zwischen den Wellenlängen die Streuung der Spektren im Datensatz, d.h. Bereiche im Spektrum, die deutlich streuen, werden gemeinsam in einem Faktor beschrieben.
