Mit seiner Grundlagenforschung zu den Fragen der Allgemeinen Relativitätstheorie, der beobachtungsorientierten Gravitationstheorie sowie der Vereinheitlichung von Relativitätstheorie und Quantentheorie untersucht das Institut die Entwicklungsgeschichte unseres Universums.
Forschungsthemen sind die physikalischen Grundlagen und mathematischen Methoden der Allgemeinen Relativitätstheorie, die numerische Simulation und experimentelle Beobachtung von Gravitationswellen ( von Supernovae, Doppelsternsystemen, Schwarzen Löchern u.a. ) sowie das fundamentale Problem der Vereinheitlichung der Allgemeinen Relativitätstheorie mit der Quantentheorie.
