Im Mittelalter stand auf dem Schlossberg eine Kirche und eine Burg und an der Aare eine Siedlung mit einem Flussübergang.
Gegen Mitte des 12. Jahrhunderts gehörte die Gegend zum zähringischen Rektorat Burgund.

In the Middle Ages, a church and a castle stood on the Schlossberg, and there was a settlement with a river crossing on the Aare.
Towards the middle of the 12th Century, the region belonged to the Zähringer Rectorate of Burgundy.
www.thun.chSie entstand im frühen Mittelalter als kleine dörfliche Siedlung auf einer hochgelegenen und damit hochwasserfreien Terrasse der Leine ( Honovere = das hohe Ufer ).
Daneben lag ein bedeutender Flussübergang, denn hier kreuzten sich zwei wichtige alte Fernstraßen.
Aus der kleinen Siedlung entstand im späteren Mittelalter eine kleine Marktsiedlung die schon bald Stadtrechte bekam und an das Fürstengeschlecht der Welfen verkauft wurde.

Next to it was situated an important river crossing, where two long-established major roads crossed.
In the late Middle Ages the small settlement became a small market town that soon received its city charter and was sold to the royal house of the Guelphs.
