It is 6:30 a.m. and the “ Steam Express ” from the Weserbergland Museum Line is charging its way at 80 kmh through northern Germany.
Its plume of smoke is visible from a distance above the gold-yellow grain fields. Axel doesn’t get tired in the parlor car.
“I grew up on the lines,” he says cheerfully while cracking open the first beer for the group next to him, who are now singing Auf der Schwäb’schen Eisenbahn to the accompaniment of a harmonica.
