Apothekendienste besorgen die Patienten mit den Arznei- und Sanitätsmitteln, und zwar sowohl aufgrund ärztlicher Rezepte als auch ohne ärztliche Rezepte.
Die Apotheken geben den Patienten Arzneimittel auf Rezept entweder ohne Bezahlung (wenn der Medikamentenpreis völlig von der Krankenkversicherungsanstalt vergütet wird), oder gegen zuständige Gebühr (wenn die Krankenkversicherungsanstalt den Medikamentenpreis nur zum Teil oder gar nicht vergütet).
