In Tieren muß z.B. der Energieträger Glucose von einer Zellsorte in das Blutkreislaufsystem ausgeschleust werden und von anderen Zellen von daher importiert werden.
Auch Pflanzen müssen Metaboliten ( Sucrose, Aminosäuren ) über weite Strecken transportieren.
