Er studierte 1980 bis 1985 Biologie an der Ruhr-Universität Bochum , wo er anschließend auch seine Doktorarbeit schrieb und als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter arbeitete .
Am Bochumer Lehrstuhl für Allgemeine und Molekulare Botanik habilitierte er sich 1996 und war hier als Hochschuldozent tätig.

He studied biology from 1980 to 1985 at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum where he went on to complete his doctorate and work as an academic assistant.
