The museum's main theme is ice and Ortles. Messner tells the story of great glaciers, the South Pole, the North Pole and the Yeti- a.k.a. the abominable snowman- using objects collected, mementos and personal reflections. Ortles represents the symbolic centre of the entire exhibit.
