Wie viele andere Komponisten seiner Generation nahm Leyendecker an den Darmstädter Ferienkursen für Neue Musik teil und beschäftigte sich intensiv mit seriellen Kompositionstechniken, ohne sich jedoch damit nachhaltig zu identifizieren.
1971 erfolgte ein Ruf als Theorielehrer an die Hochschule für Musik Hamburg, wo Leyendecker 1981 Professor für Musiktheorie und Komposition wurde.
