Aufgrund der nach Osten zunehmenden Kontinentalität des Klimas befinden sich Ostmecklenburg und Vorpommern an der Ostgrenze der natürlichen Hochmoor-Verbreitung.
Die in Hochmooren extremen Bedingungen hinsichtlich des Wasserhaushalts, der Nährstoff- und auch Sauerstoffarmut des Wurzelsubstrats sowie des Lokalklimas bewirken eine hohe Spezifität des Lebensraums, an die nur wenige Spezialisten unter den Pflanzen- und Tierarten angepasst sind.

The extreme conditions of the peat bog, in terms of water regime, poverty in nutrients and oxygen of the root substrate, and the microclimate of the bog, require great specialization by plant and animal species that only few have evolved to survive and thrive in such a habitat.
