Der zeitliche Bogen der antiken Originale spannt sich von archaischer Zeit ( 6. Jh. v. Chr. ) über die griechische Klassik ( 5. / 4. Jh. v. Chr. ) und den Hellenismus ( 3. – 1. Jh. v. Chr. ) bis hin in die römische Kaiserzeit und die Spätantike ( 1. – 5. Jh. n. Chr. ).
Neben Bildwerken, die einst zum Schmuck von Heiligtümern und öffentlichen Bauten und Plätzen sowie als Grabdenkmäler dienten, finden sich unter den Marmorskulpturen der Glyptothek auch zahlreiche Porträts herausragender antiker Dichter, Denker und Herrscher von Homer bis Platon, von Alexander dem Großen bis zu Augustus und Marc Aurel.
