Sein Nachfolger im Lehramt als Philologe und Archäologe wurde Otto Jahn ( 1819-1869 ), der sich die Direktion des Museums bis 1861 mit dem Philologen F. Ritschl teilte.
Jahn, der vor seiner Bonner Zeit vor allem durch mythologische Studien und den ersten Vasenkatalog in München hervorgetreten war, schrieb hier Untersuchungen zu römischen Wandmalereien, Militärabzeichen sowie den ersten Aufsatz über "Darstellungen des Handwerks und Handelsverkehrs".
