Die Peking University wurde 1898 als „ Metropolitan University “ gegründet und hat seitdem eine führende Rolle im Bereich der Hochschulbildung in China inne.
1912 wurde sie in „Peking University“ umbenannt und im Jahr 2000 wurde die Peking Medical University in die PKU eingegliedert.
Sie umfasst heute 5 Fakultäten, 31 Fachbereiche, 12 Institute und bietet 101 Bachelorstudiengänge, 224 Masterstudiengänge und 202 PhD-Programme an.
