In stadtplanerischer Hinsicht werden Parameter wie Siedlungsdichte, Siedlungsstruktur, Funktionstrennung und – mischung, Infrastruktur und Verkehrskonzepte, und der Einsatz von Grün als Element zur Steuerung von Komfort und Stadtraumqualität sowie weitere Themen in ihrer Bedeutung für das soziale Leben und die Lebensqualität in der Stadt dargestellt.
Unter der Beachtung der jeweiligen Bevölkerungsentwicklung in den Städten werden alternative Strategien für den Umgang mit vorhandener Bausubstanz in Regionen mit abnehmender Bevölkerung aufgezeigt (Rückbau), während in wachstumsstarken Gebieten die ressourcenschonende Erweiterung vorhandener Stadtstrukturen sowie das Planen von neuen Siedlungen unter Beachtung nachhaltiger Planungsprinzipien untersucht wird.
Gebäudebezogen werden architektonische Fragen nach Typus, Topos, Tektonik und Textur erweitert um die Aspekte des lokalen Klimas und des Energieeinsatzes.

In consideration of population development in the cities, alternative strategies are elaborated to deal with existing buildings in regions with decreasing population (reuse), whereas in fast-growing areas the resource-friendly expansion of existing urban structures as well as the design of new settlements is analyzed with regard to sustainable design principles.
Focusing on buildings, architectural questions of type, topos, tectonics and texture are complemented by aspects of local climate and energy use.
