Zu den Basisverfahren zählen die Reinton- und die Sprachaudiometrie.
Die Verfahren nutzen dabei zum einen reine Sinus-Töne zur Prüfung des Gehörs an der Hörschwelle und zum anderen in Listen erfasste Zahlwörter, Einsilber, Reime oder Sätze zur Messung der Verständlichkeit von Sprache.
Der Patient wird dazu in einen ruhigen Raum gesetzt und bekommt Töne oder Sprache z.B. über einen Kopfhörer vorgespielt.
