Er besuchte das Gymnasium und studiert im Anschluss von 1894 bis 1898 Nationalökonomie an der Universität München und der Universität Marburg, wo er Mitglied der Burschenschaft Arminia Marburg wurde.
Von 1905-1908 war er Geschäftsführer des Handelsvertragsvereins, seit 1904 Stadtverordneter in Berlin, Mitglied des Brandenburger Provinziallandtages und 1908 Gründungsmitglied der linksliberalen Demokratischen Vereinigung ( DV ).
