2014.marmot.deDer Name der Sixtinischen Kapelle rührt von Papst Sixtus IV. Francesco della Rovere ( 1471-1484 ), der die antike Große Kapelle in den Jahren 1477-1480 umbauen ließ.
Die auf das 15. Jh. zurückgehende Dekoration der Wände umfasst:Scheinvorhänge, Geschichten aus dem Leben des Moses ( Südwand - Eingang ) und aus dem Leben Christi ( Nordwand- Eingang ) und die Portraits der Päpste ( Nordwand - Südwand - Eingang ).
Sie wurde von einer Gruppe von Künstlern ausgeführt, die sich anfangs folgendermaßen zusammensetzte:

It was executed by a team of painters made up initially of Pietro Perugino, Sandro Botticelli, Domenico Ghirlandaio and Cosimo Rosselli, assisted by their respective shops and by some closer assistants among whom Biagio di Antonio, Bartolomeo della Gatta and Luca Signorelli stand out.
