Disadvantages of the standard substrates such as rough metal electrodes, suspension with gold and silver colloids and silver island films are the local discrepancies in the morphology and the low reproducibility.
Periodical metal surfaces generated by lithographic techniques do not have these disadvantages and can be optimized by the adaptation of single process steps for maximal signal amplification.
The structuring of the substrates is obtained by e-beam lithography of a PMMA ( Polymethylmethacrylat ) layer with a layer thickness between 100 nm and 300 nm.
