In den derzeit 83 Max-Planck-Instituten ( MPI ) betreiben über 5.500 Wissenschaftler sowie mehr als 13.000 Doktoranden, Diplomanden, studentische Hilfskräfte und Gastwissenschaftler Grundlagenforschung in den Natur-, Lebens- und Geisteswissenschaften.
Gegründet wurde die Max-Planck-Gesellschaft 1948 als Nachfolgeorganisation der seit 1911 bestehenden Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gesellschaft.
