In der weißrussischen Hauptstadt Minsk wurden im Mai mehrere Oppositionelle, darunter der frühere Präsidentschaftskandidat Andrej Sannikow, in Schauprozessen zu mehrjährigen Haftstrafen verurteilt, weil sie gegen die gefälschte Präsidentschaftswahl vom 19. Dezember 2010 protestiert hatten.
Ebenfalls im Mai gewann das aserbaidschanische Schlagerduo Ell & Nikki den 56. Grand Prix Eurovision und machte das kleine kaukasische Land einer breiteren europäischen Öffentlichkeit bekannt.

Also in May the Azerbaijani pop duo Ell and Nikki won the 56th Eurovision Song Contest and thus made the small country in the Caucasus known to a wider European public.
