Aware of the problems of globalised and diversified value chains – such as poor health and safety and fire protection in garment factories in Bangladesh and child labour on African cocoa plantations – we try as best we can to weigh up our purchasing decisions with ethical considerations.
Now – in response to some extent to the dilemma facing customers – manufacturers and retailers are increasingly bringing production and product sales into line with sustainability issues and integrating social and environmental factors into their corporate strategies.
www.giz.deDurch Trainingsmaßnahmen sollen die Kakaoproduzenten lernen, die Produktionsbedingungen soweit zu verbessern, dass sie den Erfordernissen der drei führenden Initiativen für Umwelt- und Sozialstandards im Kakaosektor, Fairtrade, Rainforest Alliance und UTZ Certified, entsprechen und nach deren Richtlinien zertifiziert werden können.
Die Richtlinien der Initiativen sind Mindeststandards für den umweltgerechten Anbau von Kakao, den verantwortungsbewussten Umgang mit Agrochemikalien, den Schutz der Biodiversität sowie die Sicherung sozialverträglicher Bedingungen, wie faire Entlohnung und Überwindung von Kinderarbeit.
In der Pilotphase des Projekts wird in enger Zusammenarbeit mit den Standardinitiativen ein Lehrplan erarbeitet, der den Erfordernissen aller drei Initiativen entspricht.
www.giz.deThe project will provide training for the cocoa producers to improve their agricultural practices and meet the requirements of the three main standards initiatives in the cocoa sector – Fairtrade, Rainforest Alliance und UTZ Certified – and to achieve certification by them.
The guidelines of these initiatives include minimum standards for environmentally sound cocoa cultivation, for handling agro-chemicals responsibly, for protecting biodiversity, and for ensuring socially acceptable conditions, such as fair pay and an end to child labour.
During its pilot phase, the project is working closely with the standards initiatives to develop a collective training curriculum that complies with the requirements of all three initiatives.
