Die Beobachtungen gelangen mit dem Spektrometer VIMS ( Visual and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer ) während des 59. Titan-Vorbeifluges am 8. Juli 2009. Nach der Aufbereitung der Daten erkannten die Forscher am Kraken Mare in der nördlichen Polarregion des Titan ein sehr helles, infrarotes " Glänzen ", ähnlich dem spiegelnden Glitzern von sichtbarem Sonnenlicht auf einer Wasseroberfläche.
