In the 1920s and 1930s, Rabbi Leo Baeck was a leading figure of liberal Judaism.

Elected in 1933 to the position of president of the newly-founded Jewish governing body – the Reich ’ s Deputation of German Jews ( Reichsvertretung der Deutschen Juden ) – Baeck was the most important representative of German Jews.

In 1943 Baeck was deported to Theresienstadt camp, which he survived despite severe physical abuse.
