The Tabulaturbuch is one of the most important manuscripts for the six- to eleven-course lute from the transition period between the Renaissance and Baroque.

Joachim Held presents with this CD one of the most beautiful collection of known and less known pieces of the late 16th and early 17th century. With his lute he brings a widely quoted but hardly researched manuscript from 1619 to life.

Johann Sebastian Bach is one of the few great, generally known composers who also wrote for the lute.

Musicological research considers Bach to have written seven works for lute:

BWV 995, 996, 997, 998, 999, 1000 and BWV 1006a.

BWV 995, 996, 997, 998, 999, 1000 and BWV 1006a.

But by the mid-nineteenth century the idea that all these works were indeed written for the lute was already in dispute.

For this reason Joachim Held has given this recording the – perhaps provocative – title " The Original Lute Works of Bach " and considers only three compositions (BWV 995, 998 and 1006a) as being intended for the lute.

For this new edition the accidentals have been adapted to modern practice ; random bar lines have been unified and the figured bass realised ( the bass figures in brackets are intended as a guide when improvising the bass part ).

A small organ or harpsichord is suitable for playing the basso continuo, preferably supported by a lute or chitarrone.
